Eliza Askarova – a success story
As you probably remember , Eliza Askarova was a GW tennis player who was a two time finalist and a three time podium winner at the Tennis State Championships. Eliza graduated from GW in the spring of 2019. She headed to the University of Delaware as a recipient of a full athletic scholarship in the fall of 2019.
In the fall of 2019, I received a text from Eliza saying that there was a problem with some of her ELL credits and that her eligibility might be in jeopardy with the NCAA clearinghouse. My maternal instincts kicked in and I felt so bad for this freshman who is adjusting to college life and being told her eligibility is being questioned. I have to give a tremendous shout out to our counselor Alex Helms who wrote letters, emails and calls on her behalf and only in a short amount of time the problem was resolved. I was able to follow Eliza on the Univ. of Delaware website and was so happy to see she was competing successfully for her team.
I saw Eliza just a few weeks ago at a store when she was getting ready to return to school. She told me that she was named MVP of the tennis team last fall at Delaware and what I am most proud of is that she is a Dean’s list student! I always worried about her status as an ELL student but she came through with flying colors. I have to shout out all the many teachers and staff members at GW who helped Eliza on this tremendous path of success. The trend on the Pro circuit lately is that players compete in college and mature before going on the pro tour. I hope someday to see Eliza on the pro circuit but pro or not, she is another success story out of George Washington.ELIZA ASKAROVA
